Paintings by British Isles artists, mostly from the reign of Queen Victoria
When visiting Waulkmill, John Everett Millais (1829 - 1896) is believed to have painted “Flowing to the Sea” shown here, and also “Flowing to the River”. Miss Stibbard, the artist’s daughter-in-law modelled for the picture “Flowing to the Sea” along with soldiers from the 42nd highland Regiment - The black Watch. In “Flowing to the River “ painted in rich autumnal golds and browns, the picture is also known by the title “The Milstream”. The original painting of “Flowing to the river” is owned by the city of Southampton, and is on view at Southampton Art gallery.
The Victoria & Albert Museum has a note about the above painting: "The unusual subject of this painting is the capture of the Inca emperor Atahualpa by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1532. As a model for Pizarro, Millais used an actor who had recently appeared in a play of the same name. Millais was only 16 when he painted this work. It belonged to his half-brother."
