Benjamin Robert Haydon

Benjamin Robert Haydon (1786-1846) was a British painter of historical scenes and portraits. We start with his portraits of the two great adversaries of the Napoleonic Wars: the Duke of Wellington and Napoleon himself. They seem to be studying each other from a distance, don't they?

Walter Langley (1852-1922) was an English painter of the Newlyn School. His main subject matter was life in English coastal fishing villages. A common theme in his paintings is the stress experienced by fishermen's wives when their men were away at sea, due to the danger of their occupation.
